JUUL — More Dangerous Than Cigarettes!

JUUL Made False Marketing Claims (To Young Adults)

In September 2019, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning letter to JUUL Labs. The FDA warning letter ordered JUUL to stop marketing its product as safer than cigarettes. The FDA cited testimony that JUUL had been marketing its vaping products as “modified risk tobacco products.” That means, the company claimed its product presented a lower risk of tobacco-related disease or was less harmful than traditional tobacco products. Here’s the real catch — JUUL actually presented at school programs. The Congressional testimony contained evidence of a JUUL representative actually speaking at a school and telling students their product “was much safer than cigarettes.” You can read more about the FDA letter in a Washington Post article titled FDA Blasts JUUL For Illegally Marketing E-Cigarettes As Less Harmful Than Regular Cigarettes.

JUUL Pods Have High Levels Of Nicotine

JUUL pods contain very high levels of nicotine. According to JUUL, one pod actually contains about the same amount of nicotine as an entire pack of cigarettes. JUUL pods have a much higher concentration of nicotine than regular cigarettes or even many other e-cigarettes. And, because JUULs do not have filters, no nicotine is lost through filtration. The high concentration of quickly delivered nicotine from JUULing puts users at risk of both injury and addiction.

A new study, specific to JUUL, found the nicotine concentrations in JUUL devices are “sufficiently high to be cytotoxic, or toxic to living cells when tested in vitro with cultured respiratory cells.” JUUL has become known for its highly concentrated e-liquids that impact the user.

Many E-Cigarette Products Also Contain Dangerous Chemical Additives

In addition to nicotine, many e-cigarette products contain chemical additives that are also harmful. According to researchers, these chemical flavorings and additives can cause serious lung inflammation damage. One chemical found in some other e-cigarette flavorings is diacetyl. When vaped at high temperatures, diacetyl is toxic and associated with a very serious lung condition called popcorn lung. Another commonly used e-cigarette chemical called propylene glycol is also known for respiratory effects. Many e-cigarette users have complained about swollen lymph nodes and inflamed airways after using vaping liquids with propylene glycol.

Nicotine Addiction Among Young Adults Is A Health Crisis

Across the United States, a new generation of young adults has become severely addicted to nicotine. For years, the rate of new smokers in the United States declined. That trend has now reversed. The rising rate of young people addicted to nicotine should concern all of us. As young people become addicted, we are also beginning to see increased lung (and other) serious injuries. The rising rate of young adult JUUL addiction is a health crisis that should be immediately addressed.
